An Introduction To Saint Dnyaneshwar And His Dnyaneshwari

Dnyaneshwari is a commentary in Marathi on the Geeta. Eknathi Bhagawat is a commentary on the eleventh canto of Shrimad-Bhagawat. The Tukaram Gatha shines as a pinnacle in the tradition of Abhangas by saints in the Dnyaneshwar line. Bhagavad Geeta is in Sanskrit. Its style is compact. It is saturated with rich thought content. During Dnyaneshwar’s times, common people could not follow the metaphysical discussion in the Geeta, because they had no access to the Sanskrit language. The Geeta, being the essence of the Master Spirit and a book of life, Dnyaneshwar thought it essential to communicate the message of the Geeta to the common man. Hence his Marathi commentary on the Geeta. He vowed to manifest the abstract Supreme Principle into a tangible form.

PREFACE

The Bhagawad Geeta, the Brahma Sutras and the ten main Upanishads constitute, what is known as, the Sanskrit Prasthan-Trayi. Dnyaneshwari, Eknathi Bhagawat and Tukaram-Gatha are known as Prakrit Prasthan Trayi. ‘Prasthan’ means the beginning of a journey for a pious cause. The seeker of the Supreme Being or of the infinite knowledge starts his journey in the realm of metaphysics under the guidance of these sacred books. Hence the importance of Prasthan-Trayi. The essence of the Sanskrit Prasthan-Trayi is mainly metaphysical, whereas the Marathi trio is a little different from it.

Dnyaneshwar says, “The Sanskrit speech of the sage Vyas and my Marathi language befit in the palanquin of one and the same purport.” He showers all the nine sentiments or ‘Rasas’ in his elaboration of the thoughts enunciated in the Geeta.

‘Dnyaneshwari is a great work.’ These words of Saint Namdev are truly vindicated. The message of this great work should no longer be limited to the Marathi speaking people only. It should reach the vast masses of all languages through English. This is the demand of the age.

Keeping this broad outlook in view Dr. H. V. lnamdar and Prof. D. K. Deshpande, my friends, have ventured to present this small book in English. The life story and the literary works by Dnyaneshwar are given in brief as a background. The authors then deal with Dnyaneshwari. They have given a lucid introduction to the purpose of writing Dnyaneshwari, the philosophy discussed in it and its poetic beauty that enchants the readers. Summarising Dnyaneshwari chapterwise is a special feature of this monograph.

Newase is a holy place in the Ahmednagar district. Here Dnyaneshwar discoursed this Marathi composition, set in the ‘Ovi’ metre, to the saints and devotees at the temple of Mohiniraj. While describing this event the authors say :

“The scene can be visualised even now. The calm and placid flow of the river Pravara, the old temple of the Hemadpant style, there by the side of the pillar “Pais”, Dnyanadev was seated.

“Nivruttinath, his Guru, was seated in front of him. Both of them were surrounded by the eager audiences consisting of devotees and saints. The eyelids of Dnyanadev were closed. We can visualise the scene with our eyes of imagination. Dnyanadev then opened his eyelids, like pearl-Oyster which bursts, being unable to contain the ready pearls. Dnyanadev’s tender lips parted; and sweet words started flowing out”.

Dnyaneshwari is prominent in the literature of the world. The Pasayadan, or the prayer for Divine Grace, incorporated in the Dnyaneshwari, is a universal song. The Ovi, or the stanza in Dnyaneshwari, is not merely to be read, but has to be experienced. The message should percolate into our life.

The introduction in English of such a world-respected book, in this monograph, is an important event. I congratulate both the authors and the publisher for bringing out this splendid work.
